HIRING STAFF: Wow! This can be a great shift in ministry or the biggest mistake of your lifetime. I’ve had the responsibility of hiring many people some were great decisions while others led to my biggest conflicts. So, here are a few thoughts that potentially can save you some major pain. 1. Try to get a recommendation from a friend that is like-minded (these have been my best hires when I ask a friend if her or she knew someone they could recommend to me – Most of the time they will be very honest about their assessment and know the background of the person they are recommending. 2. If you are hiring a staff member, find every church where they have served. Then contact the man that was their pastor and boss at the time. This is the person (which may not be the current pastor) who will know the working manner of the staff member. The key word you are listening for is LOYALTY. 3. During the interview, ask the person this question to prevent surprises in the future. Is there anything I haven’t asked you that I need to know? Is there anything that could present a potential problem in the future? 4. Once you determine there is someone you want to hire, present the financial package as close to the front as possible. You want to get this behind you and to help the potential staff know almost immediately if he/she can live with it. A part of God’s will is taking care of your family and meeting your obligations and if the finances aren’t there then that person needs to move on when considering a move.
